On Saturday night, Carlos Yulo made history by winning a gold medal in the men’s gymnastics floor exercise at the 2024 Paris Olympics. He became the first-ever gymnast and male athlete from the Philippines to win gold at the biggest sporting event in the world. However, the spotlight has shifted as his mother, Angelica Poquiz Yulo, revealed that she and Caloy are not on good terms.
Following Yulo’s victory, netizens noticed a lack of celebratory posts from his mother, Angelica, along with cryptic comments, sparking speculation about a rift in their relationship.
This speculation, however, was eventually confirmed by Angelica during an exclusive interview with 102.7 Star FM Manila earlier today.
In the interview, Angelica disclosed that the main reason for their rift is Caloy’s girlfriend, Chloe San Jose. “Ang naging mitsa, ever since ay yung babae talaga,” she said, referring to Chloe.
According to Angelica, the tension escalated when Caloy’s brother, Eldrew, and his teammate were supposed to stay at Caloy’s dormitory in Japan during their training camp.
The dormitory, funded by the Philippine Sports Commission, was also being used by Caloy’s girlfriend, which made Caloy’s parents uncomfortable. The parent noted that Caloy’s girlfriend was not officially allowed to stay at the dorm, referring to her as an “outsider.”
Angelica further expressed her concern about the living arrangements, saying, “Sa tingin niyo ba patutulugin ko ‘yung anak ko [Eldrew], menor de edad, kasama siya at ‘yung babae [Caloy and Chloe]?”
She worried that Eldrew and his teammate might accidentally see Chloe’s private parts due to the small space in the studio-type dormitory.
Additionally, Angelica claimed that their family believes Chloe is intentionally distancing Caloy from them.
“Okay lang (at first), then noong nagkita, feeling ko inilalayo niya [Chloe] sa amin si Caloy,” she stated.
Angelica clarified that they had not stolen anything from Caloy and only used a portion of his money to renovate their home. “Yung hindi aaray yung bulsa niya,” she said.
She also mentioned that because of this mother-son conflict, Caloy’s oldest and youngest siblings harbor resentment towards the Pinoy Olympian.
Prior to this interview, some of Angelica’s previous posts and comments went viral, leading netizens to speculate that she and Caloy had a misunderstanding.
After Caloy placed 12th in a recent competition, Angelica shared a post praising the Japanese team for winning the men’s all-around final performance.
The post received 65,000 reactions, including 29,000 angry and 32,000 laugh reacts, with many netizens criticizing Angelica for not supporting her son.

A particular comment by Angelica went viral, where she prayed for her other children, Karl and Elaiza Yulo, to succeed, seemingly excluding Caloy. “Para Kay drew at yza wala akong hindi gagawin,” she responded to another comment.

Angelica also shared a post about a mother’s love, mentioning only her three other children and excluding Caloy. “I love you already when you were in my tummy and I love you even more when I first laid my eyes on you. No matter how you age you’re still my forever babies,” she wrote.

One netizen commented, “kinulang na naman e lol,” to which Angelica replied, “pala desisyon Kau. Di ko matag kasi blocked ko nga ahaha.”
All this began in Angelica’s post way back August of 2023, saying, “Ngayon ko na realize ahaha. Dati very vocal ako na akala ko si Jorielgel Yulo ang papatay sa akin sa kunsomisyon at si Karl Yulo ang magiging pasaway pagdating ng araw dahil grabe ang mga binibigay sa akin na kunsomisyon. Mali pala ako dapat pala di ako naging judgemental…”
This was then followed with a lengthy post, saying, “NGAYON KUNG SA TINGIN MO NAGIING MISERABLE BUHAY MO SA AMIN. I THINK IKAW NA ANG MAY PROBLEMA..”
After his awarding ceremony, Yulo mentioned only the family of his girlfriend, Chloe San Jose, in a post-game interview, which went viral for not including his own family.
As Yulo competes in the men’s vault finals tonight, he aims to secure another gold medal at the Paris games.
