A video featuring a nursing review lecturer from Caloocan recently made rounds on social media as netizens applauded her for her unique teaching skills.
39-year-old lecturer Haydee Soriano Bacani has been teaching at a review center for two years now.
“Most of the songs I compose, hindi lang siya tungkol doon sa lesson. Meron siya dapat na mantra. Mas tumatatak siya sa kanila, mas napadali, mas mare-review nila instead of opening their notes. Kakakanta lang sila, maalala na nila ‘yung important information,” Bacani told The Philippine STAR.
“Magugulat sila na ‘yung pinapa-fill in the blanks ko, lyrics nung kanta na related doon sa lesson. Kahit na mga hindi nursing, nagko-comment sila na natutuwa sila sa ganoong style ng learning,” she added after some videos went viral on social media.
Bacani said that her love for writing poems paved the way for her originally composed songs for her obstetrics lectures.
“‘Yung talent ko sa paggawa ng poem, paglalagay ng rythms nila, na-apply ko siya. Siguro sa extensive ng experience ko, minsan nagiging complex ‘yung lecture. Nakaka-receive ako ng mga evaluations na ang hirap niyang i-absorb minsan,” Bacani shared.
“So the next season, I really tried na upuan talaga ang lecture and my goal is unang-una, mapa-simplify talaga siya. Gusto ko kahit ibang profession maiintindihan niya ‘yung tinuturo ko.Kailangan engaging talaga ‘yung lecture,” she added.
It was just this year that she started writing songs for her lectures. Bacani works as a national lecturer in one of the leading nursing review centers in the country.
“I really try to find a song na classic siya kasi may mga nagre-review na hindi naman fresh grad. Dapat kilala siya kahit anong edad. Dapat ang title niya is Regla Queen kasi it’s about menstruation or menstrual cycle. Kaso sabi ko parang ang sagwa, so dahil OB ang tinuturo ko, OB Queen ‘yung title niya. Pumatok talaga siya mga estudyante and from there, tinawag nila akong OB Queen. Iba na ang pangalan ko, hindi na Ma’am Haydee ang tawag nila sa akin, OB Queen na,” she recalled.
As of this writing, she has five originally composed lyrics and incorporated them in some viral music.
“Dahil nakita kong trending siya at gusto siya ng estudyante, may ibang concepts akong tinuturo like major deaths ng mga mothers or buntis. ‘Angel Baby’ ‘yung ginamit kong isang kanta. ‘Yung lahat ng bleedings in pregnancy, ginamit ko ‘yung kantang ‘Bleeding Love.’ Ginawa ko siyang ‘Bleeding is Bad,’” she explained.
“Meron din akong kantang ‘Jopay,’ ang pangalan niya is ‘Nanay.’ It’s about blood compatibilities between mothers and the fetus. Itong pinakahuli ko is ‘yung ‘Raining in Lisensya,’ based sa trending din na kanta ng Lola Amour na ‘Raining in Manila,’” she added.
Bacani said that she saw the effect of her lectures on her students. “Sometimes students are telling me na hindi lang sila natuto, nag-enjoy pa sila.”
At the age of 18 years old, Bacani worked as a midwife. For 8 years, she worked as an OFW in Saudi Arabia until she decided to go back to the Philippines to study nursing in 2017 at the Philippine Women’s University.
“There was a time I won’t forget, CUT sabi ng isang nurse sa akin, ‘midwife ka lang.’ ‘Yung impact niya sa akin, ‘ah, ganito pala talaga siguro kapag midwife ka lang,’ nilalabel-an siya ng ganun. Tuloy-tuloy na po ‘yung pagwo-work ko sa hospital hanggang sa nagkaroon ako ng desire na i-level up ‘yung aking scope of practice,” she reminisces.
She eventually graduated in October 2020 and became a topnotcher at the 2021 Philippine Nursing Licensure Exam.
“‘Yung pagtotop ko, lahat ng pinagdaanan ko parang, God is giving me all these challenges and struggles so that ‘pag nagturo na ako, I can face my students masasabi mo sa kanila ng harap sa harap, mata sa mata, na kayang-kaya mo ‘yan. Huwag ka lang talagang susuko. I think hindi lang knowledge ng lecture ‘yung nabibigay ko pero ‘yun may purpose pala lahat ng pinagdaanan ko,” Bacani stressed.
