Selena Gomez laments men who think women with standards are being high-maintenance

Selena Gomez recently opened up about her relationship status and dating requirements while promoting her latest release, Single Soon.

On Aug. 30, the 31-year-old American singer-actress was invited to SiriusXM Hits 1 LA for an exclusive interview with its hosts Tony Fly and Symon.

Selena discussed some of the lyrics of Single Soon which included the line, “a little bit high maintenance, but I’m worth a try,” which she said was a description that could refer to her.

“I think I have standards, and I think I live in a world right now where boys confuse standards with high maintenance,” she explained, noting that having “standards” might be interpreted as being “high maintenance.”

She continued, “The line was really fun because I’m not ashamed to say, ‘I actually require X, Y, and Z for you to be with me.'”

When asked about her “X, Y, and Zs,” Selena said, “You gotta be cool, man.”

“Not cool in the sense that people think you’re cool. You just gotta be nice and like, please make me laugh and also just be good to my family and people around you,” she clarified.

The Disney alum said that she’s not looking back at her past relationships and has openly embraced her single status, sharing that if she ever does find a partner, they must complement her life rather than serve as a solution to her insecurities.

“I think everybody goes through the phase of, ‘Oh, it’d be nice to like have someone,’ and I get that. But you know, I’m just enjoying where I’m at and I just want to be happy with who I am so that whenever that person comes into my life, I can just have them add on to me instead of being this insecure, you know, person that I normally used to be,” explained Selena.

The Same Old Love singer teased fans with her upcoming album, describing it as “something fun before we start into this whole new era”, which does not have a release date at the moment.

“There’s not one sad song on my album,” she revealed.

“And I don’t mean that in a way, like, everything is not full of meaning because I think even the most poppy songs can have heart,” Selena said.

“And I want that to come across, but I genuinely don’t feel like I have anything in me to write something negative. It just doesn’t match with where I am anymore,” she added.

Selena’s previous dating pool included hitmakers Justin Bieber, Joe Jonas, and The Weeknd.
