‘Twice akong hinimatay’: Mona Alawi opens up on status of health condition

Ivana Alawi’s sister Mona Alawi who’s diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes revealed a recent health scare she experienced.

While doing Q and A during a Japanese mukbang with their mom and brother Hash Alawi on Ivana’s vlog, Mona was asked by a fan about her current health condition.

“Medyo hindi po maganda,” Mona’s mom Fatima Marabella answered for her daughter.

“Si Mona kasi ‘yung taong meron nang nararamdaman, hindi pa nagsasabi,” Ivana chipped in.

“Ayokong pumunta ng ospital kasi gusto nila every six hours ang blood test. Kasi akala ko naman magiging okay din siya, pero there was something else pala,” Mona stated.

The former child star said she usually encounters shortness of breath but recently collapsed twice that she had to call her brother’s help to bring her to the hospital.

“Hindi makahinga…Actually, until now madalas ako ma-out of breath and something happened sa breathing ko. ‘Yun ‘yung hindi ko na kinaya. Twice akong hinimatay,” said Mona.

She added, “Hindi normal sakin na himatayin. So from there, I was thinking of going to the hospital and then ‘nung nag-collapse ako and hindi ko na kinaya, I called kuya.”

“Pag pasok ko [sa room] nasa floor lang siya, hindi makatayo,” Hash recalled.

Ivana continued, “Tapos dinala sa ospital, gusto ng ospital i-ICU kasi malala.”

The actress-vlogger went on to share that Mona suffered Diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA). “Everytime magkakaganun siya parang palala ng palala,” said Ivana.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, DKA is a life-threatening complication that “develops when your body doesn’t have enough insulin to allow blood sugar into your cells for use as energy.”

“Pwedeng magkaroon ng complication sa brain,” continued Ivana. “Kasi yung complications tinamaan daw yung heart niya and lungs niya.”

“Yung acid dun pala tumama, eh minsan umaakyat sa utak. God is good, wala naman ‘dun. Wag na lang sana,” their mom added.
