Maris Racal just released her newest single, Ate Sandali, and its accompanying music video which she described as a “friendly reminder to all women out there.”
Ate Sandali premiered on Wednesday night, featuring Maris grooving and rapping to the catchy and upbeat tune of the first track off her upcoming mini-album in August.
Speaking at a virtual media conference, Maris shared that the song’s lyrics were originally written by herself when she and her ate were going through a past heartbreak, adding that it quite served as a friendly advice for the both of them.
“Sa song na ‘to…(it’s) sort of empowering. Masasabi kong women empowerment siya but like more on a friendly advice sa lahat ng girls who are in a relationship na medyo toxic.”
Maris continued to explain, “It’s not about hating men. Parang reminder lang siya sa mga babae na they’re beautiful and they can end a relationship. Kaya nila.
“In other words, para ’to sa mga girls na ‘marurupok’. Kasi at that time, ganun talaga ‘yung description ko sa akin at sa ate ko. Parang pinapalakas ko ‘yung loob nila sa song na ’to.”
Now that she’s going out of her comfort zone, Maris revealed that it was her singer-songwriter and producer boyfriend Rico Blanco who gave her the push to try a different music genre.
“When I wanna release this, sinabi niya na, ‘Go! Ano ka ba, matagal ko nang gustong mag-pop ka’,” Maris recalled Rico telling her about her new single which is a break from her usually guitar and piano-driven songs.
“Siya ang ang nag-push sa akin to try it. I did try naman and it sounded really great. It’s something hindi ko in-expect na maglabas ako,” continued Maris.
Asked about how she personally deals with breakups, Maris doesn’t go far from the song’s lyrics, “Kung ayaw ka niyang pusuan, wag mo nang subukan.”
“Kapag may breakup, so far I thrive naman. Hindi ako sobrang nagme-mental break down. Kasi I have this kind of mentality na ‘kung ayaw mo, ayaw mo.’ So I won’t push myself na, I really end it totally,” she said.
“But nagsusulat din ako para naman sulit yung heartbreak,” Maris said in jest adding that it’s her way of “exploiting” her emotions.
Released under Rico Blanco’s Balcony Entertainment and Sony Music Philippines, Ate Sandali is now available on all digital platforms.
