Manila landmark Star City destroyed in fire

Nearly 90 percent of the Star City amusement park was razed yesterday, October 2.

According to the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP), at least 19 firetruck crews were at the scene but the fire raged on for over 14 hours. The crew was able to put the flames out at 2 pm.

City fire marshal Paul Pili disclosed that a full-blown investigation will start today. An arson angle arose after ballerina Liza Macuja-Elizalde, wife of park owner Fred Elizalde, discovered a tweet saying “Star City will die.”

In a statement, presidential spokesman Salvador Panelo said that the palace is one with those affected by the tragic incident.

The fire that struck at midnight broke the hearts of many as dozens of families spend the yuletide season at the amusement park.

Many mourned the devastating incident and reminisced the good times they’ve had at the park.

“Mas masakit pa ito kesa sa Titanic,” one netizen said. She added that it has always been a barkada tradition to visit the park every Christmas.

Others have shared that Star City is a big part of their childhood.

Established in 1991, the Manila landmark has been around for almost 30 years already.

The management aims to open the amusement park once again in 2020.
